Fuerte de San Diego
Description
The Fuerte de San Diego History Museum in Acapulco is a good place to learn some of the history of the state of Guerrero. The building is pentagon-shaped, and because of this, there are five main exhibition rooms. Exhibits offer unique cultural experiences, including an exhibit devoted to the Yope Indians who defended the building in a heroic resistance to Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortes. The fort suffered some damage during the 1776 earthquake, but has been restored since then. Today, you can see it in its near-original state.
The Yope people did not defend the fort -- it was begun in 1614, almost 100 years after Cortés. And it was not 'damaged' in the 1776 earthquake but almost destroyed and had to be completely rebuilt.
