Description

The so-called "Pink Palace of the Pacific" opened its doors in 1927 and has been a favorite for the international set ever since. Although there have been many renovations in its more than 70 years of operation, the hotel and grounds have remained graceful, relaxed and very Hawaiian. In one wing, each room comes with a private lanai, canopied bed and Queen Anne-style writing desk. The most luxurious accommodations, the Prestige Suites, are truly magnificent. This is one of two original Waikiki hotels, and it still retains the feeling of Old Waikiki.

Hotel steeped in history and grandeur. Rooms smelt fousty mixed with very very old tobacco smell. The air conditioner was very noisey, the furniture may have been old to fit in with the hotel but it was more like cheap old rather than antique old

WE WONT GO BACK!
By ,
Been holidaying in Oahu since 1991, always wanted to stay at the Royal Hawaiian. It has great history and heritage, and excellent staff, but our room had no drawer space; had a noisy aircon that kept us awake; a tiny bathroom; a shower over the bath (!) with poor pressure; no coffee in room; noise in corridor came straight into the room. The Sheraton promise says "We're not satisfied until you are". I asked for a change on Day 1 and was told all rooms were the same and I'd have to put up with it. Provided the above feedback to them on leaving; so what? We've had much better amenity for half the price at other hotels and won't be using Sheraton again!!!!

Full of character

Stayed here for three days on honeymoon. Really liked it, just oozes a bit of class which is rare with US hotels. We stayed in the old part, the room was great. It was not all modern etc, but it had a bit of original features about it including a huge walk-in wardrobe, I could imagine all the 1920s film stars arriving with trunks full of clothes! Staff were great, nice and clean. Nice breakfast with view of the beach ... would definitely recommend it.

Disappointed
By ,
I have stayed at this hotel on several previous occasions and found my room in "the tower" to be ordinary and overpriced. When I asked if I could upgrade and pay the difference I was treated very poorly and told it was impossible. I was extremely disappointed and will not be booking this hotel through Yahoo again.

The Pink Palace -- nostalgia at it’s best
By ,
The Pink Palace -- nostalgia at it’s best. The Royal Hawaiian is one of the oldest hotels in Waikiki and is located right on the beach. The beautiful lush gardens are breathtaking and are by the far the best you’ll find in Waikiki. The Mai Tai bar during sunset is a must visit for newlyweds or for that special romantic moment. The Abhasa Spa (although pricey) equals the Royal Hawaiian in it’s fantastic service and wonderful outdoor surroundings.

If you stay at the Royal Hawaiian, I would consider staying in the newer tower (we stayed at the older tower). Although the hotel itself is immaculate (they are always vacuuming the front steps), our room was small and outdated. We had problems with the bathroom and the décor looked like something out of the 1980’s.

Royal Hawaiian Hotel - *****
By ,
We just returned from a one week stay at this beautiful hotel. The staff is outstanding and very helpful. We've stayed at many 5-star resorts, but have never found the staff as courteous and concerned with your satisfaction as they are at this hotel. The grounds and facilities are immaculate and beautiful. This hotel is the true classic of Waikiki. The old tower is very romantic and classic. We had a few issues with the room, such as air conditioning, fuses blowing, etc. The staff upgraded our room and gave us complimentary drinks and food at the different bars/restaurants in exchange for each inconvenience. The location is the best if you want to be in the heart of Waikiki. And yet, it is amazing how quiet and relaxed the entire resort is. The room and halls are very quiet. Pool and hotel are steps from the sand. Another nice feature is the section of beach which is reserved for the Royal guests only. The hotel provides lounges and umbrellas for your use daily. Just remember to reserve the day before and a few dollars to the pool guys will get you up front on the beach for the best view. FYI-Hotwire calls this a 5-star resort and they are correct. Awesome!!

Very nice, hotel, but no longer the leader in luxury
By ,
The pink palace is landmark in Honolulu, and loving all those old, fabulous hotels (Hotel del Coronado in SD is one of my faves), I had to check it out. My findings were both good and bad. There's plenty of atmosphere here, and for lovers of kitsch, nothing can beat sipping a mai tai in the bar where they were supposedly invented (it's creatively called "Mai Tai Bar").

However, the hotel is in need of a serious update, and the service could use some improvement too. For the prices, you can stay at almost any of the luxury hotels on the island. In order to stay in the running, this old gal needs a bit of a face-lift. But I, for one, am rooting for her!
