Matteo's Italian Restaurant
Readers of "Honolulu Magazine" consistently rate this as the most romantic restaurant - not to mention one of the top Italian restaurants at Oahu. The cosmopolitan-tropical location is unbeatable, and the service strikes just the right balance between attentive and professional. The menu features classic Italian and Continental dishes such as Osso Bucco Milanese, Cioppino and Seafood Lasagna. The wine list is one of the most extensive in Waikiki. Valet parking is available.
My wife and I ate at this Waikiki restaurant twice on a recent visit. We were hungry for Italian food one day and decided to try the restaurant since I had read a positive review on it, and I had a 1/2 off of the second entree coupon. The first night we ate there we were very pleasantly surprised at how good the food, service, and ambience was. A few nights later we decided to go back as well and again had a very pleasant dining experience. If you are looking for decent Italian food (Frank Sinatra used to eat there) at a reasonable price (especially with the coupon - look in the free advertiser booklets that you can get on the streets or hotels in Waikiki) in a very nicely luxurious restaurant in Waikiki, we recommend this one! I am sure we will return on a future Hawaii visit.
Sinatra may have eaten here, but he never came back.

The half price coupon has turned this once romantic, rat pack hide away into a tourist trap. The bigger crowds have caused the food to drop in quality. My veal was a knot of grisle. They have a large wine list, but be careful, make sure to ask how many bottles they have if your going to drink more than one bottle. When we ask for our second bottle of wine they were out and the replacement was awful.
For what has been voted one of the most romantic places in Hawaii, I was appalled. Romance does NOT include screaming babies and noisy children. Appetizers were great and the wait staff kept our glasses filled and bread restocked, BUT my wife's food came out cold. The waiter took it back and said he'd bring her a new plate... when it came back... it still had a shrimp which she had pulled the tail off, it's a miracle!! HINT: Microwaving a dish, especially a seafood dish... does not improve the flavor, re salmon bits... yuck. Overall I was sorely disappointed in the restaurant, especially after all the glowing reviews I had read. Maybe next time I want romance, I'll go to McDonald's!!! That way I expect crying babies and microwaved food.
