Batu Caves

Description

This is one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Malaysia and a popular tourist attraction. The Caves are popular not only for being the southernmost limestone outcrop in the Northern Hemisphere, but the labyrinth that makes up the Batu Caves also supports a variety of exotic wildlife. There is a 272-step concrete staircase leading to the temple cave. The main cave holds a shrine of Lord Subramaniam, a Hindu deity. A cave gallery is located at the foot of the caves featuring clay figurines and wall paintings depicting scenes and figures from Hindu mythology.

this place is really cool, you get a good idea of the religion of malaysia when you go to this place. Its also some good exercise going up and down all the stairs. Bring some comfortable shoes.

If only it could last forever...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/06/2005
The surreal carvings, moulds and paintings bring a sense of spirit to all who enter, regardless of their own religion. While tranquil most of the time, it is during the extravagent Thaipusam festival in Jan/Feb that the true colours of the generous Tamilians shine in their masses during the festive atmosphere

Would have been nice had it not been for the kitsch and cheap commercialisation.

It's a nice place for a retreat from hustle and bustle of KL. You can catch a glimpse of the religiosity of the Tamils. It's a very impressive place and I imagine it as extraordinary during a festival.
