Clift Hotel reconstructed itself out of the ruins of the 1906 earthquake. Today it proudly stands 36 stories tall. It has been named by Travel & Leisure as one of the best hotels in the United States. The rooms are plush and cozy with stylish decor. The wall panels from the famous Redwood Bar and Restaurant were carved from one large California redwood tree. Enjoy a drink or fine food as you listen to the live piano music.

What a fabulously cool hotel in a great location - Union Square. If you have ever stayed at the Delano in Miami you will love this place. (same hotel groups owns the clift) \nOnly con is it can be kind of noisy at night due to the party atmosphere.
05 Jun 2005 | A Yahoo! UserVery trendy. The restaurant, Asia de Cuba, was one of the best I have ever been too. Location, Location, Location...the Clift is minutes away from the heart of Union Square and all of SF is at your fingertips. Bring your wallet...you are gonna need it.
05 Jun 2005 | A Yahoo! UserI looked forward to staying at the Clift since I live near the Mondrian in L.A. and like that hotel's look (they're part of the same hotel group). However, it was very difficult to locate the Clift and the only distinguishing markers were the purple tinted windows facing Geary. And valet is VERY expensive at $40/night - there's a parking lot on Taylor on the same block as the Clift that is $20, so you can either go that route and conveniently get your car when you want to, or pay twice as much to wait at least 20 minutes every time you want your car from valet. They're nice, helpful guys, but the wait can test anyone's patience. The lobby is very nice with the surrealist furniture, the Living Room just off the reception area, and the swanky-looking Redwood Room. I stayed in a standard guest room, which was an adequate size. And as others have mentioned, the walls are very, very thin (not that I heard anything beyond a blaring TV, fortunately). The rooms are tastefully decorated with a beautiful color scheme, but the set up is cumbersome. The bedside tables are made of clear plastic without drawers, and the bathroom is teeny. I thought the abundance of mirrors were amusing and practical (they make the rooms look much bigger). I didn't get a chance to use room service, but I found the concierge very helpful. The Redwood Room is nice for a few drinks, but you'll probably get tired after standing around with your drinks with no where to sit. In comparison to other cities, I wouldn't say that the drinks are that expensive. The S.F. Asia de Cuba is located next door and visible through glass, but again, I enjoy the L.A. Asia de Cuba much more. Overall, the hotel isn't a value, but it can be fun place to stay.
