The corner of Unter den Linden and Friedrichstraße is one of Berlin's best addresses and definitely not the place where you would expect to find a budget hotel. Hotel Unter den Linden is a relict of East German days, with threadbare carpets and brown tiles in the bathrooms. The past lies like an invisible (or visible) layer of dust over the hotel, the aura of a long-gone era still clinging to the walls. But in comparison to the futuristic granite and chrome constructions which are springing up all over the district, this hotel has something snug and nostalgic about it. A thorough modernisation is currently being carried out and the room prices are rising - slowly but surely.
