Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, many Berliners thought of Friedrichshain as a grey, faceless quarter full of shabby old tenements and ugly postwar constructions. Nowadays Friedrichshain is the heart of Berlin's "alternative" cafe and club scene. Less commercial than better-known Prenzlauer Berg, the area around Simon-Dach-Straße is brimming with in bars and cool cafes. "Go east - go Friedrichshain!" seems to be the slogan of the day. The Tulip Inn is close to all the action and has comfortable rooms with a definite Parisian flair - fine wooden furniture, brass lamps and tasteful wallpaper. A good alternative for night-owls and party-goers wanting to escape the tourist groups which have taken over the nearby Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts.
