34 Great King St, Edinburgh, EH3 6QH, United Kingdom…
More and Maps
The Howard is a small but sumptuous Georgian town house that looks out towards the Firth of Forth from Great King Street and is located not far from Princes Street. Much of the original interior has survived, including the cornice-work and the breakfast room's hand-painted murals. The spacious rooms are elegantly and individually decorated with fine antique-style furniture and bathed in the ever-changing natural light streaming through the large windows.

I recently stayed at the Howard for two days at the end of a trip to Scotland with my mother. My only regret is that we were not there longer. The service was excellent: from check-in to a very early morning departure, there was no request or task that was not attended to. The Howard is the best of understated elegance. I sat in the library on a rainy afternoon, reading a book and enjoying a glass of red wine and a cheese plate. When next I asked for a glass of wine the following evening, the staff remembered what I had ordered the day before and wondered whether I wanted the same. The butler suggested he unpack for us and iron our clothes. If that's not enough to make someone return, I don't know what is except perhaps the excellent restaurant.

05 Jun 2005 | A Yahoo! UserThis is not anything like staying at a hotel! The Howard is situated on a street that looks like an 1800's movie set, complete with cobblestones. The hotel is unmarked save for a brass plate mounted by the front door. The service is impeccable and the personal service exhibited by the staff is something you will not get in a larger hotel. The downstairs contains the offices, dining room, and a large sitting room, all furnished with antiques. It is like stepping back to a different age. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of the staff. I highly recommend the Howard.
