On a recent visit to NYC, I was walking down Broadway taking in the sights,
sounds, and people-watching. At about 3:00pm on a Saturday I was overcome
with the sheer weight of the crowd on the street, so I decided to pop into
a church, take a breather, and see one of New York's historic sites.
As it turns out, I walked into GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH (802 Bway) and an
amazing organ recital was in progress. Even though I had missed the start
of the concert, I strolled down the center aisle and found a seat. What an
experience, to take a breather from the crowds and traffic, I took in the
sounds of the beautiful pipe organ and enjoyned looking around at the
stunningly beautiful stained glass.
The organ recital only lasted
about 45 minutes, and the organist -- obviously very talented and skilled
-- played Baroque, Classical and more modern organ works for a nicely
diverse afternoon concert.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience,
which made me feel as if I had walked into an 18th Century English country
church, and I was energized and exhilarated upon leaving after the concert.
There was no admission charge for the concert, either, which was
very nice and shows that this New York church is generously sharing its
space and gifts with the community around it.
Don't miss a free
organ concert on Saturdays at 3:00 pm. Call if you can to confirm if a
recital is on: 212-254-2000, and enjoy the afternoon.
