I lived in Chiang Mai for 2 months and made a point to visit the night bazaar at least once a week. I went for the food - mango sticky rice or banana roti, but I always ended up buying something. My favorite item was the wrap around pants and short sets. Really unusual, beautiful patterns, and very comfortable. I've never found anything like them in the U.S. I've also gotten fake watches, although the last time I was there, August 2003, the police were cracking down on fakes and there weren't any on display, but you could go into the "back room" to buy them. The artists who paint portraits from pictures are fantastic. For a small fee they can turn your favorite photo into a work of art using oil paint or pen and ink. Extremely reasonable for the absolute brilliance of some of these copyists. My sister-in-law had one done of her niece which you could swear was a photo. Really excellent work. There are tons of other bargains. Speaking of bargains - don't forget to bargain to get a better price. "Farangs" (foreigners) are always quoted a higher price than locals.
