What a fabulously cool hotel in a great location - Union Square. If you have ever stayed at the Delano in Miami you will love this place. (same hotel groups owns the clift) Only con is it can be kind of noisy at night due to the party atmosphere.

Very trendy. The restaurant, Asia de Cuba, was one of the best I have ever been too. Location, Location, Location...the Clift is minutes away from the heart of Union Square and all of SF is at your fingertips. Bring your wallet...you are gonna need it.

I looked forward to staying at the Clift since I live near the Mondrian in L.A. and like that hotel's look (they're part of the same hotel group). However, it was very difficult to locate the Clift and the only distinguishing markers were the purple tinted windows facing Geary. And valet is VERY expensive at $40/night - there's a parking lot on Taylor on the same block as the Clift that is $20, so you can either go that route and conveniently get your car when you want to, or pay twice as much to wait at least 20 minutes every time you want your car from valet. They're nice, helpful guys, but the wait can test anyone's patience. The lobby is very nice with the surrealist furniture, the Living Room just off the reception area, and the swanky-looking Redwood Room. I stayed in a standard guest room, which was an adequate size. And as others have mentioned, the walls are very, very thin (not that I heard anything beyond a blaring TV, fortunately). The rooms are tastefully decorated with a beautiful color scheme, but the set up is cumbersome. The bedside tables are made of clear plastic without drawers, and the bathroom is teeny. I thought the abundance of mirrors were amusing and practical (they make the rooms look much bigger). I didn't get a chance to use room service, but I found the concierge very helpful. The Redwood Room is nice for a few drinks, but you'll probably get tired after standing around with your drinks with no where to sit. In comparison to other cities, I wouldn't say that the drinks are that expensive. The S.F. Asia de Cuba is located next door and visible through glass, but again, I enjoy the L.A. Asia de Cuba much more. Overall, the hotel isn't a value, but it can be fun place to stay.

A very hip hotel located in downtown SF that we stayed at with some friends for a recent weekend. The lobby and bar are amazing and places to be seen, even if you don't stay there. The rooms were... ok. The beds were great, the sheets were wonderful, but overall, I felt the room (esp the bathroom) could have been decorated from stuff at Target. Not that anything is wrong with Target, but at this rate per night? The shower had an adjustable nozzle that allowed it to be up high enough for me to stand directly underneath like under a waterfall, but it was too clever for its own good-- it kept sliping down to spraying waist-level! Overall, a nice enough place, but I would probably stay somewhere else next time.

I stayed at the Clift with about a dozen other people on New Year's Eve 2002. There was a huge, sold-out fancy dress party going on on the first and second floors. The very chic bar there (the Rosewood Room) is one of our favorite places to hang out, even when we're not guests at the hotel. The room itself was mostly used as a staging area; no one got any sleep that night. It was nicely decorated and about average sized. A big bonus for us was the dressing area--separate from the bathroom--which was nice for getting ready/doing touch-ups. We visited several other friends within the hotel that night, and all the rooms we saw were very attractive. It's a bit spendy, but the location and style can't be beat. Food and drinks in the bar are quite good too.

The hotel rooms were very elegant and the bed very cozy and comfortable. They cater to high end customers. I enjoyed the elegance but for the price there are so many hotels in San Francisco that surpass this. If you like to be treated once in a while with elegant surroundings and feel like a VIP, try it out. It is within walking distance of some of the theatres and the lounge is very nice and happening. Probably would not stay there again at the same price rate.

The Clift Hotel offers a trendy, funky atmosphere combined with sheer elegance and style. Welcomed by a warm room filled with stylish large and small accent chairs. The rooms are fluffy and cozy with small details all around. Lit scented votives fill the room with a romantic essence and inspire relaxation. The lobby bar is sheek and elegant, redwood panel decorate the walls and portraits watch you as you share a drink and appitizers with friends. This hotel definately complements the particular style of San Francisco.

For that "I haven't left New York" feeling, one might want to head to the Clift Hotel. Hipper then thou bounces man the doors, sneering at you if you aren't Britney. When you check in you get a special "Guest Card" so you can enter the oh so cool Bar. Please people, We are in San Francisco! Rooms are small, beds are comfy, showers have the strongest water pressure possible without being a power washer. Not so shabby, until one realizes how much they paid and then has their friends turned away at the door because they don't have a "hall pass." Welcome to the Junior High of the jet set.

Sure, the Redwood Room bar is cool. Sure, Asia de Cuba is supposed to be great. Sure, the rooms are decorated in an uber-cool Stark way. But the overall experience, especially given its pricetag, is just not all it's cracked up to be. And certainly DO NOT use valet parking. I concur that it is outrageously expensive (nearly double what I pay in New York!!) and it takes forever to them to retreive your car. While it is maintained better than most Schrager hotels, it's just not worth the hassle and expense...unless you like wading through throngs of cooler-than-thou doormen and partyers.

After booking a $325 per night loft style room, obviously designed for
enjoying the room, this wanna-be CIA uniformed security team (3 men) knock
on my door at 9:15 pm and tell me the hotel provided stereo system is up
too loud. Oh, you mean the one you so graciously advertise is in every
room. The one you rent out CD's to be played in?? You mean the one that
is hooked up to a subwoofer somewhere underneath the bed. My volume is set
to 23 and it goes up to 50. Well it's your voice too, it really carries
and the walls are very thin. Hmmm... I'm in here all by myself and
I'm not singing so I'm sorry but I can't help. By the way I
didn't see any advertisements about the room coming equipped with thin
walls?? But I do remember them touting the Nakamichi stereo system more
than once.
Gee, if I wanted this kind of attitude I would have
gone to L.A.
