A very Special Birthday

three stars

My husband booked a weekend at The Danieli for my milestone birthday present. On the whole it was a magical holiday and the hotel lived up to many expectations, but fell short on service with a smile. As soon as we arrived we tried to book dinner at its famous rooftop La Terraza restaurant (the only one in the hotel) but were told it was fully booked for the whole weekend! No apology, no flexibility for accommodating residents. We dined out and returned to La Terazza for coffee and drinks, but were told that no drinks were served there unless you were dining - even though we were residents and by that time there were vacant tables and late diners were still being served after dinner drinks/coffee etc. The next day we asked the concierge what we should expect to pay for an hours return tour in a water taxi, and were advised the hotel could book this for us at a fixed price of 90 euros, so we booked. Sadly the tour only lasted 35 minutes and the driver demanded 100 euros! We complained to the hotel who agreed that was incorrect and that they would contact the taxi driver and obtain a suitable refund. Alas no refund materialised and we were met with a shrug of the shoulder when we asked about the outcome. Again, absolutely no apology. In our opinion The Daneili whilst resplendant in its decor is totally complacent in its personal service and on these grounds we would neither return nor recommend. The place we chose to eat when unable to book La Terazza was at The Londra Palace hotel a few yards away from The Danieli. Here we enjoyed a fabulous meal equal to the standard of La Terazza with welcoming and friendly service with a smile - and a lagoon view! If we return to Venice we'd opt to stay at The Londra Palace. Come on The Daneili, please do better!

Fantastic!

five stars

Hello Everybody, I have been in Venice 3 times and all of them I stayed in Danielli. I don't know how you see it but it is worth it to me to spend something more in order to gain the experience to stay in beautiful places around the world. This is an exceptional place.Only the fact that this is a palace 600 years old and that everything to the "old" building is original I think it pays of. The location is perfect. You can go in all the famous important places of Venice but is good to know that you are 5min walk from your room!I had a canal view room which the view only paid off....It is sad to read reviews from people that are going in Europe in these unique spectacular places with all this history and art and they finally complain about "the room is small"...you were planing to leave there forever??? Anyway, I highly recomend this place to anybody that is willing to spend something more.Believe me is a fantastic place with INCREDIBLE FOOD!(try the risoto Danielli.....)The prices of the terrace restaurant is much better than the ugly turistic places in the canal believe me.

Simply the Best

five stars

I have been to Venice four times, and each time I have stayed at the Danieli. My first time there was all it took for me to make it my regular stop on future visits. It is not cheap, and that is its biggest drawback. You are paying the same rates there as you would at any of the top rated hotels in the world, but Venice is one place where I have always been willing to splurge. A private boat takes you from the airport, to the Grand Canal and to the Danieli fronting it. The boat goes down a small canal and parks itself at a private dock leading directly into the hotel lobby. That is when you first realise that maybe that money was well spent. The lobby itself is nothing short of spectacular and no matter what kind of room you end up in, it's nice to repeatedly walk into the hotel and having that reminder that you are staying at someplace special. My room was a small one that fronted a side canal. It was quiet and looked across to buildings in beautiful Venetian decay. The room was serviceable as was the bath, but neither was special. For that, I would have had to pay a lot more money for those amazing suites that front the Grand Canal with spectacular picture postcard views of Venice. But management still took care of me. The rooms were always clean, the linen fresh and plentiful, and every evening, I would find some goodie left for me, whether it was candied jellies or chocolates, all beautifully presented. Stepping out of the hotel put you right on the Grand Canal, and just steps from St Mark's Square, the Cathedral, and Doge's Palace and the Campanille. In fact, the location was so ideal that I could venture out for a couple of hours, return to the hotel to drop off my treasures, and head out again. Because this is a walking city, with no public transportation, you need to find a place that is central to everything, and the Danieli fits that bill. A special bonus is the Danieli's sister relationship with the historic Hotel des Bains and the Excelsior, both on the Lido across the lagoon. This means that when the shops close down as they do every day for two or three hours at midday, you can go to the Danieli's private launch, and hop a boat that will take you across the lagoon to either of the hotels. There you can head to the beach, or lay out at either hotel pool and be pampered by hotel staff who honor guests from the Danieli. On a warm summer day, this is truly a great benefit. One final thing. It's not cheap, but breakfast from the hotel terrace high above the lagoon is the best morning meal you could possibly have. The food is good, but the views are unbelievable. I have been lucky enough to have stayed at a lot of great hotels around the world, but the Danieli definitely ranks in my top five.
