I flew to Natal with Thomsonfly in Jan 2007 and found my own accommodation instead of taking the package as I wanted to have my own flexible schedule and also fly to Rio for a few days to meet friends. On the first night I checked into the Hotel Visual which is a 4 star hotel on Ponta Negra beach. The hotel was nice and has all mod cons (almost) including swimming pool and restaurant, but what irked me was that the rooms were not very clean. I had a beach view room with a balcony, but the tiled floor was full of sand which hadn't been cleaned away. The next day I took a walk on Ponta Negra and checked out the hotels so I could get a cleaner room and find somewhere comfortable and safe. Of the six or so hotels I saw, the Manga Rosa Hotel was by far the best. I paid about 160 Reals per night (40 pounds per night) for a room with the ocean view and a blacony. The hotel was extremely clean and comfortable and the service without doubt the best I have received in my travels to about 20 different countries. I highly reccommend this hotel and if you want to travel to Natal and do your own thing, you cannot beat a stay at this hotel. It is ideally located being only a minute away from all the bars and beachfront stalls. You can walk out of the hotel onto the beach which is about 10 metres away. All the extra activities you want to do can be arranged at the hotel or at nearby agents and all the staff are really welcoming. Even though I tried to tip some of the staff they refused to accept, saying it was just a pleasure to be hospitable.
Great for: Beaches, Scuba/Snorkeling, Nightlife, Budget Travel, Family Holidays
Last Visit: February 2007

(Report Problem)I found Natal to be my favorite spot on Brazil's northeast Coast. The city is filled with skyscrapers and endless shops, which give it a very prosperous, busy feeling. The city's focus on tourism as a main industry means that natal is not covered in a layer of smog that has come to characterize many of brazil's metropolises. Additionally, the "Norte-riograndenses" (people from the state of RN) are some of the most vibrant, and friendly people in all of brazil. While Natal only has a selection of historical buildings, the "Ribeira" neighborhood has stood for over 400 years and has much to see in the way of history, or in nightlife if you know where to go after dark. Warm, clear blue waves crash onto a shore of palms and sand dunes. This is the place that "the city of the sun" calls home, along with its nearly 1 million residents.
