(Report Problem)Salvador da Bahia offers one of the most distinctive experiences in Brazil at very affordable prices. The third largest city in the country, one of Brazil's oldest (1549) and its first capital (till 1764), Salvador offers an abundance of things to do and see. From its African-influenced food, music, religion, art, and pace, to its numerous historical treasures (including the oldest Cathedral in Brazil), it merits a visit. There are beaches in the city and far more splendid beaches ones just outside, to the north (along the Linha Verde) and across the bay (in Morro de São Paulo), but it also is a great place to begin an exploration of Bahia's interior, including the old sugar-growing towns of the Recôncavo, and the spectacular Chapada Diamantina region, whose mountains, caves, and waterfalls are perfect for exploration. So many who visit Salvador fall in love with the city and region: go and you may figure out why!

(Report Problem)Salvador shows a totally different side of Brazil, where the food, culture, and people are really different from that in the south of Brazil. There is a strong African influence here in the food and especially the music. Pelourinho is a really cool place on Tuesday nights in January because there are a bunch of bands that play and a lot of people relaxing at streetside bars and cafes. Morro de Sao Paulo is by far my favorite. It's an island accessible only by boat or plane, where there are no cars on the island. You just walk everywhere, and the beaches are very clean and beautiful as opposed to some of the beaches along the ocean side of Salvador. Be prepared for beggars and vendors to approach you in Pelourinho in the evening - they even touch you to get your attention. While there are a lot of policia militar around, I'd still be wary of carrying any valuables or expensive cameras.
