#1 City in the world with tons of history, entertainment, scenery, and so much much MUCH more!

(Report Problem)I visited Plovdiv in May, 2000 and spent five days there. The "Stari Grad" (Old Town) is one of the most outstandingly beautiful cities in the Balkans, even if a shade over-restored in places (especially the classical monumnents). Much of the newer town is very pleasant. I found the people helpful and friendly. Plovdiv offers excellent value for money, but tourists should *avoid* the times when there is a trade fair, as room prices rise sharply then. My one little criticism is that the city isn't as geared to tourists as one might expect. (Note the lack of tourist info on the city's website, for example). Things may have changed somewhat since 2000, but in many of the smaller restaurants and cafés it is rare to find staff who speak English, French or German. So, be patient, use pointing where appropriate, be willing to use a mixture of languages ... People are used to this situation and it's worth the effort. Rely on "collaborative communication" where necessary - and make sure you know some basic Bulgarian. In many of the shops in the "Stari Grad" you will find that people speak English or another West European language. In short, a much underrated city of exceptional beauty!
