A magical island
This is one of the world's must see destinations. I can't agree with the negative review. A perfect example of what mankind is doing to the earth on a small scale although the inhabitants did leave some amazing monuments (and almost no trees) as they destroyed their civilisation - with a little help from Western disease. Flying for 5 hours from Chile (also a must visit place) makes you understand how such a unique culture developed here. Be prepared to spend several days here soaking up the atmosphere and exploring the hundreds of stone heads. We were still at the airport on arrival when our plane left and the scene was like something from a Spielberg movie. No light polution and a totally clear sky with a million stars. I hope I can go again....... If you do go and want a guide, try and locate Jan, a descendent of the original inhabitants.
