I loved Chongjing. It has a flavour of what China was like years ago unlike Beijing which is so modern, although nice in different ways. You will not see many westerners as most arrive and board the Yangste cruise the same day. The food is hot and spicy and Chongjing beer is great. Look for sweets/cookies made out of peanuts, a regional speciality. The people are feisty but very friendly, as were the police and officials. The night cruise on the Yangste lasts about 2 hours and is worth the time. The centre of the city is modern but there are areas which date back much older in the suburbs.
