Certainly Different

four stars

OK don't go to Varadero for the food! The Hotel inc stuff is edible but not exciting - we started eating out (better but not much) - Beaches are beautiful and the weather (early Jan) was perfect - visit Havana - you must see this city before it (possibly) changes. We went on an overnight tour which was incredible value! Coach + guide, lunch in Hotel, further tour, night at good Hotel, Tropicana Night Club Show (inc bottle of Havana Club between 4!) buffet breakfast then free time - home late afternoon. ALL FOR £104!!!(pp) - would we go back? - possibly not but only because other places to see - but you should experience Cuba! OK airport security a bit silly! If you get bored in your hotel go to music bar Calle 62! - great place and cheap!!

Great for: Beaches, Scuba/Snorkeling, History/Culture, Nightlife, Family Holidays

Varadero Airport

one star

Small airport, facilities very poor, customs and immigration are a nightmare! Be prepared for lots of unnecessary questions, long delays and luggage searches! Far beyond the realms of reasonableness!

Blau is the colour!

five stars

Thanks to an overbooking the cuban tourist board moved us to "Blau", an all-inclusive hotel, which was so good we just have to put it on the map. We'd not expected much of Cuban hotels or food, but Blau would hold up well anywhere. It is newly built - opened Nov 05 and is immaculately kept and exceptionally well managed. the all-inclusive really is just that and nothing is too much trouble. the bar waiters would happily fill thermos flasks with iced coctails to take down to the white fine sand beach. The beach itself is behind a screen of mangrove across a short boardwalk, which has the effect of creating two quite discreet and distinct areas, you don't see the hotel from the beach, an effect that we really loved. Icing sugar sand, turquoise seas, plenty of available shade and free watersports, a free drinks bar and loo close bar - what more could you ask for - oh and a fantasticlly well appointed kids club with it's own play areas in and out of doors, a paddling pool the whole bit! Great food with huge choice and barbeques every lunchtime. Really good atmosphere throughout the place, couldn't fault it.

Great for: Beaches, Family Holidays

beautiful beach

three stars

Varadero is beatiful for tourists who go with money and on vacation. But the story is very different for the people who lives there. They can hardly enjoy anything since the Cuban dictadorship of castro does not allow them to even go inside a hotel. Very sad!

A vacation we will never forget

one star

We arrived 01-07-05, for a 7 day vacation. First there were tons of hassles at the airport. We sat in a holding cell with a guard standing outside that was holding a AK-47. We were never told why we were being held there. Finally they told us, we could leave and go to our hotel Tryp Peninsula. We get to the hotel and hotel security already knows were coming because they have been tipped off to watch us very closely. I found this out later from one of the security guards. Our room was a dump, sheets were nasty, no clean towels, hair in the tub and sinks, terrible room service. Day 2 started out good, we had a nice breakfast and were getting ready to go sightseeing and were stopped as we tried to leave the hotel by the police and were told to go back to our rooms and pack because we were being forced to leave the country. So we did and were escorted back to the airport. We boarded our plane and flew back to Mexico City. We were not given any refunds for the hotel. We were never told why we were being forced to leave the country. I rated safety as being great because we were with armed police officers and security guards almost the whole time. After arriving in Mexico City we flew on to Cancun and had a great time. Definately a vacation we will never forget.

Varadero ..sì que pone

four stars
