Angouleme is an interesting town, built upon a hill, surrounded by stone walls (ramparts). I lived in this town for three years and have since revisited it. You can meet everyone in town by going to local bars and not acting like a tourist (carrying a camera around your neck etc.). I would suggest going to la Mars Bar at place du champs. Le Mars Bar has never changed--same motiff as the sixties. Rather than staying in a hotel talk to the locals there about renting a furnished or unfurnished apartment, they're all over the place--move in with sleeping bags if necessary. It's a small town where DISCO never dies: there are three discoteches (Riverside,le Bateau, la Pineche). Buy your food daily at the outdoor markets--you'll meet people. Visit cafe La Paix, which across from city hall and Le Mars bar. You do not need a car--everything in town is within walking distance--it's a great place to "kick-back". Note: the french say what's on their mind, if you ask them the American "How are you?" they may actually tell you rather than saying "Fine"--get use to it. Good luck ...
