As a traveler, I'd really only hit the big cities before...Paris, London, Tokyo. And while they have their charms (world-class museums, endless things to do), they all tend to feel kind of the same after a while. So for a change of pace, my boyfriend and I decided to check out Avignon, and it was absolutely amazing. The entire town is small enough to walk (as we discovered one night when we got lost on our way to dinner) yet there is plenty to do and see. Plus, the train station is conveniently located just outside the city walls (also walkable) and it's extremely easy to make day trips to the surrounding towns like Aix-en-Provence, Isle Sur la Sorgue, and even Marseilles. Les Halles, their food court, is a must-see, as is the main square, Place de Horloge. Although the restaurants around the square are pretty touristy, it's worth it to stop by for the experience of an al fresco meal on a warm Provencal night. Also worth seeing is the Palais des Papes. You purchase audio tours at the front that are very well-executed and available in multiple languages. Be aware that many businesses in France are closed on Sunday, so be prepared for an exceptionally lazy day. This is a great day to hit the weekly market at neighboring Isle sur la Sorgue. It's the perfect spot for souvenirs of your time in Provence.
