The centre ville is perched on a plateau nearly a hundred metres above the railway station, it is only a short distance if you can cope with the steps! But take a taxi or if you plan to go further, hire a car from one the the companies situated around la gare. The shopping is traditional, and mostly pedestrianised, although watchout for the cars! The clothes shops, the chocolatieres and cafes are fabulous. The Cafe de la Pais on the corner of La Place de Laclerc is typically french, sitting out under the canopy of canvas and trees surrounding the square is just a joy. Watching the people who, I might add are most cosmopolitan and very friendly. You have to have a sharp intake of breath every so often as you watch the waiter from the cafe make his way, tray laden with drinks and gorgeous snacks, across the road between speeding traffic and buses! My favourite time of year in Poitiers is Christmas and New year. When it is scarf, boots and gloves weather, snow lakes wafting down and setling ever so softly in your cup of hot mulled wine as you meander between the brightly lit covered market stalls displaying all manner of feasts for the eye and wallet, intent in watching the children and adults laughing as they fall and precariously make their way around the skating rink set up in the middle of the square. Then, as dusk falls early, into one of the surrounding cafes for a bite to eat, another warming drink, then home.
Great for: History/Culture, Theatre/Music, Nightlife, Family Holidays
