I have been a frequest visitor to The Gambia since 1990 and I have to say that is probably one of the best places I've ever been to. The people are so friendly and welcoming and the costs are very low. Sure there are the beggars, but I've been attacked and spat at by beggars in London, and on one occasion threatened with a knife! By contrast in Gambia, the only trouble I ever had was with a very stoned man on the beach who wanted me to buy some 'weed' from him. He followed me and when I shouted at him to go away, he just fell over and went to sleep - now that's funny! Gambian music and food is wonderful and the beaches are mostly very clean, and although there is real poverty there, the people have a pride and an elegance that is sometimes sadly missing the the lazy, corrupt west (including UK). One last thing - don't visit Gambia unless you can deal with 'real' Africa because outside the luxury of the hotels and resorts (which are like white ghettos), you will not like it at all. However, if you mix with the locals, you will have an experience that will teach you how others live an extraordinarily happy life with almost nothing of value except culture, family, history and laughter. Happy travelling!!!

(Report Problem)its an ideal place to go if you want to relax and soak up the sun,the only fault that i found was the amount of hounding you got when you stepped outside the hotel complex.if you are the sort of person who can say no and mean it then you will be fine,if your not, then you will end up loosing all your money!!! the food is great and its so cheap there, its hard to believe.i will go back again.

(Report Problem)Gambia is a dreadful place. It's a very beautiful country but only go there if you like being constantly pestered by locals, who are mostly intent on getting their hands on your wallet. Many people take refuge in the hotels and never leave. The moment you set foot outside the safety of your resort you will be accosted by locals who don't take no for an answer. I've travelled the world independantly, but Gambia is one of the worst places I've been to. The only thing going for Gambia is that it is cheap and has a good climate.
