regular visitor

five stars

as a regular visitor to gib i must say i am surprised at some of the comments, gib is a very safe place to be and i would have no problem walking around at night, the police are in full control and know most of the young people there personally, there is a total respect culture unlike the uk, as for the beaches ok not the best but walk for 10mins over the border into lalinea and great beaches what more could anyone want!

Are you sure you were in Gib?

Dog Hole? One Street Town? Not a safe place? I can only assume you took a wrong turn and ended up in algeciras! Gibraltar is the safest place I have ever had the luck to live in - superb for kids - virtually no crime. The bars and restaurants are superb (try Charlie's at Marina Bay for starters!), the nightlife, whilst admitedly not Ibiza (thankk God) is relaxed, enjoyable and may I say - a bit more mature than some resorts I have been too! As far as things to see and do, give yourself 3 or 4 days to fit everything in - from Rock tours, caving, scuba diving, dolphin and whale spotting etc., then take a few days to make trips to Ronda, Granada, Seville, Cadiz etc., all within a couple of hours drive. Best Hotel by far - the Caleta. Married there in July and it was the best day + honeymoon we could have asked for. Shops are varied and interesting, people are fantastic - and if you saw a policeman being ridiculed by locals he was probably their brother or son or Dad! Yeah it has it's tatty areas, but name me a town that doesn't. I love Gib, and would recommend it to anyone that is willing to keep an open mind, and is not expecting Great Yarmouth on the Med!!!!

Great for: Beaches, Scuba/Snorkeling, History/Culture, Nightlife, Family Holidays

Unbelievable.

four stars

After booking a 4 day stay at the Bristol Hotel in Gibraltar, I read some of the reviews on this website and thought Oh No! the people are pushy and unfriendly, who only pretend to like the British, there’s gangs of unruly yobs, it’s a one street town selling cheap tat, there’s with nothing to do at night, the streets/beaches are dirty and if I ventured up the Rock I’d be attacked by rabid apes. But nothing could be further from the truth; almost as soon as I got there a passing local gave us a 20 minute tour in her car to show us the lay of the land. The hotel was clean, comfortable, very well positioned and good value if you pre-book. Views from the top of the Rock are fabulous. The food is very good, including a lovely mix of Mediterranean and traditional British. Although the main street does have a lot of designer watch shops, it’s quite long with a wide variety of other shops and it is kept very clean. There lots of nice places to eat with pleasant staff. Side streets can be very steep but do have lots of character. The people are pro-British. Gibraltar’s fascinating history is dominated by them holding out against all odds, (the number of union flags around is a testimony to this) e.g. during the great siege 1779/83, all they had to eat at times was grass, seaweed and wild onion. One note of caution though, is not to parade plastic bags to the apes as it is ‘said’ they may bite to get them, but otherwise they are quite sweet.

Great for: History/Culture

hidden pleasures

four stars

gibraltar is not just main street (though main street is good for electricals, watches and cheapo cheapo booze). Good beach, some excellent restaurants tucked away, top quality sailing and diving. Marina is worth a visit. If you get fed up you can always nip across the border or get a ferry to tangiers.

Great for: Scuba/Snorkeling, Nightlife

Dog hole

one star

The place is an absolute dog hole. Dirty beaches and streets, unfriendly people, bars and clubs plagued by pre - pubecent teens, police officers that looked no older than 12 (2 of which, were ridiculed by some youths). - All in all, a place which i would NOT recomend AT ALL.

Not a safe place to stay

one star

We felt unsafe the whole time we were there. The kids ran riot. Catalan Bay at night was a no go area. Youths racing up and down in their cars. Even seen police officer near to tears as locals just laughed and ridiculed him as tried to take bottle of spirits off youth. This made our visit, not a good one. There is no nightlife. Some of the pubs you entered the atmosphere was terrible. We ended up staying in the Hotel.

Welcome to THE ROCK! :-)

five stars

Gibraltar is absolutly one of the most amazing places in the world. Three hundred years ago it was ceded to the brittish and has remained vitally important in many aspects since then. Its involvement in World War II is intriguing, its ethnic diversity is impressive (where else do Jews, Christians and Muslims all live together and get along?), its culture is exciting (a VERY thorough mix of Spanish, Brittish and a bit of everything else). Where else do you walk across a live runway? Where else can you see three countries and two continents with your naked eyes? Where else can you go spelunking, bird watching, dolfin watching, golfing, water-skiing/jet-skiing, mountain climbing and historical-sight-seeing all in one day? What other country has more miles of road under-ground than above-ground? The botanical gardens are classic, the food is delecious, the military presence is awe inspiring. Take a hike to the top of the rock and meet some apes (the ONLY native apes in all of Europe). Take a tour of part of the 35 MILES of tunnel and learn about Gibraltar's role in world history.

Gibraltar. A one street town.

one star

Gibraltar consists of one street, Main street. There you will find 3 types of shop, Duty free, jewllers and electrical, thats it. If you venture out of that street, you will find dirty streets, derelict buildings and waste land. Locals only speak in english when they are trying to sell you something, otherwise they all speak spanish. The british thing is just a gimmick to attract tourists and sell them tourist tat. Day visit only.
