Having flown into Shannon Airport many times, we had taken taxis to either Limerick or Ennis. On the most recent trip, being tired, we asked the cab driver to recommend somewhere in Shannon. He brought us to the Oakwood - which was terrific. More important, we realised what we had been missing. You felt safe (apparently the safest town in the country from last census!!) and had the convenience of casual shopping in a Georgian crafts centre (Ballycasey?), along with a more cosmopolitan mall across from the hotel. Best of all Shannon is in the middle of all the local attractions - 5 minute cab to Bunratty. We enjoyed the Shannon golf club, and long walks along the local Estuary - with beautiful views across the Shannon.
