The Kanheri group of caves are located in the midst of the jungles of the 108 sq km Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivili East, Mumbai. Some of the caves date back to around 2AD when they were occupied, sculpted and developed by Buddhists. It is possible to climb right to the top of the complex from where you get a view of the Tulsi and Vihar lakes as well as all the way upto the Nalasopara coast which is the ancient Sopara port, the gateway through the Vasai creek all the way upto Kalyan from where the land route to Junnar and the interior commenced. In the monsoons the caves are a waterfall paradise, however caution is required as the pathways get quite slippery. Nature lovers should walk the Yeoor trail which commence from the Forest rest house on the road before the uphill climb to the Caves. This trail goes to the highest point of the jungle comprising dense mixed forests, rain fed streams and a small temple. Excellent for butterfly and birdwatching and if lucky, wildlife sighting. Post monsoons there is a plethora of endemic wildflowers. The trail ends up on top of the Kanheri caves from where you can exit. Always carry a sturdy walking stick or bamboo pole, to help with the walk, and as a safety measure. There have been instances of robbers on top of the caves, preying on unsuspecting tourists. Please do not litter. For visitors to Bombay Mumbai, this is a most rewarding days outing.
