I went on a day trip to Pompeii. Not sure how to get there we booked with a travel agency, a Naples-Pompeii day trip. Bad idea! We spent most of our day, from 7am - 9pm on a bus... Not my idea of seeing a country. We went drove that morning to Naples where we took the bus around a crowded city, were shown the laundry hanging out of the windows of people home as "scenic", then final got to the coast stepped off the bus for five minutes to take pictures, then back on for more riding. Had lunch at this awful restaurant up the street from the ruins of Pompeii. Finally got their and only had an hour of a guided tour. Not a good day. My advice, take the train to Naples then to Pompeii. Buy a book on the ruins before entering, spend the day avoiding the tourists, and explore to your hearts content. There are 11 acres excavated so far. Then ride the train home. There is a shop in the ruins that not only has a bathroom but real air conditioning.
