(Report Problem)This is a must-do for anyone wanting to get away from the usual sites and see the streets of Beijing. You get everything from a birds-eye view from the top of the drum tower (if you climb all those steps) to an up-close and personal view inside one person's home. Of course, they take you in a home that isn't entirely typical, and everything you see is cleaned up, but it's interesting and fun.

(Report Problem)This really is a good tour. Riding around in the rickshaw is a blast. Walking around peaking in the courtyards was interesting. The meeting with the "family" is a bit staged. It is someone's house, but you have to believe they were carefully chosen by management to make a good impression. The archeologist, for example, turned out upon closer questioning to be a bit less prestigious than originally presented. The tea in Prince Gong's palace afterward is pleasant. You learn how to make tea, drink some and then are bombarded with high pressure tea sales tactics by the young lady serving the table. If you decline to buy, you are of no use to her. Capitalism at its finest. I recommend this tour as a safe way to see the backstreets of Beijing and a dying way of life. You are being shown the best side and you should take this, along with the happy Tibetan monks at the Lama Temple with a grain of salt.

(Report Problem)the hutongs are traditional houses left over from the Qing and sometimes even Ming dynasties. the houses are all in accordance with feng shui in order to increase the prosperity of its inhabitants. a cycle rickshaw ride through these streets will show you Beijing life, from the temples, tea houses and homes, that has changed little over the years. this is a must see if you want to expirence real dynastic China.
