Khon Kaen is a small city that offers you almost anything. It just all comes in a small package. Along with this comes a different dialect and culture. The people are not jaded but friendly, it is easy to get around, the food is good and cheap, there is good night entertainment, and the lodging from guest houses to the upper end are a real value. I have lived in the Esan and find it a great place to live as well as travel if you would like to get away from the main tourist choices.

(Report Problem)The city of Khon Kaen is focused on the Thai / E-san people and that is exactly what makes this place interesting. Go to the discotheque and you are being welcomed by a mainly Thai crowd. People are friendly and willing to help if you are in some kind of problem (for example your car breaks down somewhere in the villages around Khon Kaen). The food is excellent and there are restaurants all over the place for very decent prices. Hotels are good value (try Europe Guesthouse, www.europe-khonkaen.com) and even the most expensive 5 star hotel of Khon Kaen (Sofitel) is cheap compared to cheap hotels in our home country. Good place to make a stop on your way to or from Laos.
