wow

i recently spent New Year's eve at the Piazza di Spagna and like the other reviewer said: it was CRAZY. the atmosphere was i admit very exciting but it was quite dangerous, with glass flying everywhere. a great place to spend new year's if you want an adrenaline rush!

The best medicine for the weary traveler

five stars

This is the first place I walked to while in Rome. While some say that the one hundred year old Babbington's Tea house isn't worth the price, they are wrong. After a strike at our layover, having high tea at Babbington's was the best snack for a weary traveler, just enough food and drink to calm a queasy stomach and help settle you into the experience that is Rome. Note: the tea house is closed on Tuesdays.

Could skip it, but...

three stars

I can't imagine going to Rome and skipping the Spanish Steps, but the site and the surrounding shopping district of expensive stores are a disappointment. Nothing classy except the clothes and the prices.

Spanish Steps

five stars

If you go to one square in Rome - go to this one. The Keats and Shelley museum by the side of the steps is also well worth a visit. Avoid Babbingtons Tea Rooms on the other side of the steps. The cheapest cups of tea are about £7 each and the chocolate cake, presumably per slice, also £8 or so.

Best Place to Party on New Years Eve...

five stars

I spent New Years Eve in the Piazza di Spagna this last year and OH MY GOD: it was like a war zone!! Those Romans have to be the craziest partiers in the world! An uncountable number of attendees, empty and full bottles of champagne and wine being thrown into the street square, fireworks being thrown into the street, all the while daring people running back and forth across the middle of the chaotic circle to find the best point of view for the midnight celebration. I was surprised that only one ambulance was called! Two days later, it was neat to see a bride and groom running down the steps after their marriage at the church overlooking the square. Piazza di Spagna is definitely a place not to miss, but I wouldn't recommend spending your New Years Eve there unless you have some real guts.

Spanish Steps

three stars

The steps are interesting if you enjoy history already posses the knowledge of their origin. The half naked Gucci male model billboard at the top takes away from its charm. There is a magnificent McDonalds nearby that has signs leading to it. Worth a see but dont expect a life changing experience.
