i have been living here for 6 months, i moved from SoCal. NYC is a pile. There are no redeeming factors whatsoever.

I must be missing something...

As a country lad from Australia, I travelled to NY in 1992 with a mate and was somewhat fascinated by the concept of "this is where it all happens". A place to see if for no other reason than it is so different from home. Now in 2008, I returned, this time with my wife (originally from Sydney, so accustomed to city life). Prior to NY we travelled to Vegas, all around Colorado and spent a few days in and around Savannah, Georgia. In these places, the people were extremely polite and courteous, worthy of the tips that are expected in the US. Scenery (bar city of Vegas, which is just bizarre, but fun) is as beautiful as the people. We get to NY - smiles, eye contact and good will toward fellow mankind are left far behind in the distance. We went to a broadway show which was a great experience, but still the people don't look at you. Went to Little Italy and had a great meal and atmosphere (run by Italian immigrants, not New Yorkers!). The city itself is simply gross at ground level. Rubbish everywhere. Sure, there are many interesting shops, museums, Grand Central architecture etc, but you still have to walk out into the filth no matter what building you've walked into. You still have to walk out of it. Ask a question with a funny accent and just get grunted at. No wonder they think Central Park is wonderful. A bit of green respite, but still 1,611,581 people sharing 843 acres still equals one acre of park per 1,911 people. We left New York and headed for San Francisco and surrounds...sanity again! We really enjoyed our time in the States, but New York? At least it is now "out of our system".I am afraid if it is meant to be something special, worth travelling out of your way for, then I must be missing something.

been there wont go again

To keep it short we are afamily of 4 -2 adults and 2 teenagers. We stayed in Manhattan which was the equivalent of a city like delhi run down, smelly and full of street vendors. Full of tall buildings, rudest people you'll ever meet ( and i was told the yanks were hot on customer service,yeah right). No one in the shops will acknowledge you or even give you a please/thankyou but then expect a tip . Other than fast food and a few clothes it is expensive and full of rip off merchants. Times Sq is just like Leicester Sq. Got food poisioning from a well known eatery. Most of the eateries do not scratch up to UK standard when it comes to cleanliness.Only good thing was an Irish bar called Gabby O'Haras which was brilliant and where there lots of Irish where you could have a good time in a clean enviroment. I highly recommend this bar for anyone travelling to NY- Do not confuse with Rosie O'Gradys. Book all shows etc before hand or you will pay 5 times the rate when there. If you want to go sightseeing make sure you purchase a New York Pass from Planet Hollywood - we saved $1000 for a family of 4 on normal prices.

why i love new york.

i love the varity of stores in manhattan there are lots of cool places to go like the carrinege deli corn beef sandwichs there rule. and while you're over there go to carrinege hall , but first go to their website and look up a free show.

Would love to do this again.

I was a little aprehensive at first about my trip to New York, but I was also excited and looking forward to the experience. My wife, my daughter and myself went to New York, September 07. After a long trip, first from Newcastle to Heathrow and then to JFK and a mini bus to the hotel, we arrived about 7pm. We were all tired and needed an early night. We decided to go out for a drink before bedtime. We walked back from 7th ave to 8th and were standing waiting for the lights to change, probably all looking around lost. A guy next to us asked were we lost. My first reaction was, so what does he want. I said no we were OK. He said sorry I thought you were looking for something. I then said we were looking for a bar. He said I live here, I have a cigar shop just up the street. He gave us directions to a few bars and restaurants nearby. We spoke for a while about where we came from and the weather and said goodbye. That was my first meeting with a New Yorker, he was very polite and helpful. I hound this to be the case with everyone else I met in New York. When we took wrong trains on the subway and asked directions we were shown the maps and given advise were to go. I never felt in any danger or under any threat while I was in New York. The only problem I had was the weather was very hot and were not there long enough, only 4 nights, not enough time to see everything.

New York... Visit Once Only

I have always wanted to go to New York, ever since I was a child and saw it on the TV and in numerous films. It was really the only part of the USA that I ever fancied visiting. So when my partner told me he had booked us 5 nights in the Big Apple I was so happy. We were going to stay in what is thought of as the posh part of NY, Manhatten, well if this is posh I'd hate to see the rough areas. Its all about the angle of the view I think, when you see pictures of NY they always seem to be taken from a high point or even from the air, but on ground level things are very much different. Even the great Empire State Building is pretty bland from the street, though from the observation deck up on high the views of the city are amazing. The most stunning way to see NY is to take a boat over to the Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island, as the boat leaves the harbour in NY you get to see a wonderfull panarama of the NY skyline, this truly was breath taking. The Statue of Liberty, though smaller than I imagined was also a high light of the trip, set in a lovely green island this monument lived up to the image. Ellis Island was ok, but this I think is somewhere for Americans to visit, it didn't really mean a great deal to us. The amazing thing is, that this main site of historic American history was left to rot until the mid 80's when it was saved! As a gay man the Stonewall Bar on Christopher Street was a very touching place to visit as this is generaly credited with being the starting place of Gay Lib'. Though in America they lag behind the UK in equality. My biggest gripe though about the whole NY experience is that the people are truly some of the rudest, arogant and obnoxious people you could ever meet. I have never been treated so shabbily in all my life. And yet this is a culture which expects to be tipped as a matter of course! It really does make you appreciate the service we recieve in the UK, and the next time I moan about the staff in my local supermarket I will remember the terrible people who I had the misfortune to come into contact to in the States. Oh, and don't expect a thank you if you hold the door open for someone, or an appology if someone knocks you... or even eye contact in a store or restaurant, unless its to give you a withered look. Oh and if you fall in the road, expect taxis to blast their horns and run over you! The road system is leathel. When the lights say it is ok for pedestrians to cross the road, cars are allowed to turn right into the people crossing! All in all NY was a great place, ruined by New Yorkers! The best way to see America? From an airplane window as it takes off!!!

A place to return to again and again

Each time in New York is different....do the sights but go off the beaten track and explore! Go to the top of the Rockerfeller Centre....stroll in Central Park....try to find Patsy's Italian Restaurant [ where The Rat Pack ate] tucked away at the top of Broadway near to the Park - fabulous food!! Walk the streets and get a flavour of the City....stroll through Greenwich Village and Soho and try breakfast at The Cupping Room. Just enjoy!!!

A PLACE YOU JUST KEEP HAVING TO GO BACK TO

just back after my six visit the place is just like stepping into a movie only you are part of it, great food lots of variety i found the Americans very helpfull and curtious great places to see, go to Coney Island only an hour by subway from Manhattan also The Cloisters about forty five minutes on the subway the Bronx zoo also plus all the usual sights GREAT GREAT CITY

Amazing City

Probably my favourite place on the planet. Impossible to be bored - especially if you're a shopper! Stayed opposite Madison Square Gardens - hotel was awful, some of our party had mice in their rooms and ours was extremely cramped for 3 people. But the location was superb. Any visitor should take a bus ride through Fifth Avenue, Times Square and Central Park at night, and see a show - the atmosphere is great. A place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

Best 5 Days Of My Life

New york just wowed me the best 5 days i have spent anywhere in the world,City on the go 25 hours a day.people fantastic,food fantastic,sights well what can i say about them,the city is fantastic
