My favourite destination

Many excellent restaurants around the Rosebank and Rivonia area, city with an great vibe and plenty of political history to explore with tour guides who have experienced the apartheid era and the transition into democracy. Golfing excellent too. NB - you need to hire a car in order to conveniently get around as public transport is unreliable

Miss Jhb city centre as it is filthy - -Natal/Zululand much safer & cleaner.

The Northern Suburbs ie Sandton/Rosebank also Melville are places that are safe to walk,whilst driving keep all doors locked as persons lean into your car and grab your jewellery,sunglasses, even car- hijacking as its known is very popular and cheap to obtain a vehicle. If you do visit - buy only one nights accom before you travel and the rest when there, as you will only pay a tenth of what you would be charged if booked beforehand as a foreign visitor. Be safe and aware, even at the Airport. NATAL/Zululand is a much safer option and not Made into a tourist site but naturally beautiful and much, much safer, incl the Hot Indian Ocean.

we have visited every February for 12 years

we Have travelled all over SA and find the outlying districts of Jo'burg are all very clean and the scenery is stunning especially the Valley of One Thousand Hills in Natal, Montecasino in Fourways district in Jo'burg is great as the newly revamped Waterfront. Cape Town and surrounding districts are absolutely lovely, wineyards well worth a visit , even if its only for the views

Amazing!

Johannesburg was amazing! I visited for 7 days and the experience was great. From the apartheid museums to Gold reef City. Also It is a paradise for Gambling and Clubbing. I would suggest MonteCasino for a great gambling place and Rivonia RD in Sandton for a huge selection of bars and Clubs from R&B to House. I would return anytime!!!! It is also not as dangerous as everyone says. I had no dramatic experiences at all.

Our City of Gold

I live in Johannesburg and think there is no better place like home! I love being in Joburg as there is always something going on and plenty to do. Crime is improving but hey it is all over the world! I love Joburg, where the sun never stops shinning!

Cape Town any day

Ignore Johannesburg completely, instead take a direct flight to Cape Town and experience the best food, scenery, relaxed atmosphere and high social buzz you'll ever know!!

A nice place to visit...but

I've visited during Apartheid and after and noticed an extreme decline in the cleanliness of downtown Jo'burg & Hillbrow. Crime soared. Carjackings are rampant. Our friends who lived there moved away. It's a shame because Apartheid was a terrible thing. South Africa is a beautiful country. Jo'burg reminds me of Toronto Canada. Hopefully things will calm down and people will learn to live together. Shopping malls are very nice, as are the restaurants and suburbs. It's a little unnerving staying in homes surrounded by electrified razor wire. Whites are still the privileged class with blacks as housekeepers and maids. If you can get past all that, you will enjoy your stay. Venture out to Sun City, Kruger Park and other areas of natural beauty and remember that not so long ago in the Southern US we had very visible signs of racial separation that South Africa is just now trying to erase. Give them time.

I really had a great time in Jo'burg and would recommend it. I would highly recommend staying in Rosebank. Its clean and fairly safe.
