Jewel of the East

four stars

The Cambodian people are incredibly friendly. Torn by the recent events of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, they are rebuilding their society and welcome the tourist trade to boost their economy. Walk around the Riverfront at night, for some great food and cheap Angkor beer and stop into the Foreign Correspondent Club for a drink from their terrace bar, and to see photos of the media through the war. You have to head out to the Killing Fields cemetary to see the sites of the mass graves - to get in touch with the pain that the Cambodians have felt. And visit S-21, the Tuol Sleng Prison where so many prisoners were held. Word of warning - don't give money to the begging children - they are exploited by adults who take the money. Either buy them food or donate time or money to one of the many charites set up in Phnom Penh to help the children.

Cambodian Diamond Guest House

five stars

The owner Vuthy Van took us and his wife to a wonderful club for Khmer dancing. We also went to Tonle Bati and ate excellent food. Visa Sen was an excellent host for the city. It is directly behind Wat Ounalum. Less than 3 blocks from Sisowath Quay. They also have a good restaurant with great banana shakes. At night you can play cards.
