A huge highlight of Kobe is nearby Himeji. You can grab the express train to Himeji from Sannonmiya (or any station that has an express stop) and be there in about 10-15 minutes. Himeji castle is an incredible castle. Very very pictureque and really fulfills peoples image of Japan. Also in the city of Himeji is Engyoji Temple. Engyoji temple was one of the filming sites for "The Last Samurai". It's a beautiful mountain top area with many temples. You can reach Engyoji temple by bus or taxi from Himeji station (bus is cheapest). Then take a cable car to the top. The portions of The Last Samurai that were filmed there could be seen briefly in the movie: Ken Watanabe walking around his temple, meditating, Tom Cruise walking around the grounds noticing the beauty. It's a soul refreshing/replenishing type of place. Definitely worth checking out.

(Report Problem)I liked it. We went all over the place and enjoyed sumo the most.

(Report Problem)I'm an American college student currently studying in Kobe, and I love it. The Kansai area (including Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Himeji, and Nara) is a must see for those spending any significant amount of time in Japan and would like to go beyond the sprawl of Tokyo / Yokohama. So much is within an hour or two from Kobe that I've been here for 6 months already and have only dented the list of things I want to see and do. There are many neat areas you could choose to stay in Kobe, including on top of Rokko-san (Mt. Rokko) for a wonderful but chilly view (if you're willing to be about 30minutes away from downtown Kobe due to the cable car climb or taxi ride up the mountain); within downtown Kobe or in the Sannomiya (major shopping / entertainment neighborhood of Kobe); on Rokko Island (I've stayed at the Rokko Island Sheraton Hotel--very nice). Basically, all of your entertainment and sightseeing needs center around Sannomiya, so if you want to be at the center of it all I advise staying at a hotel there. It's a short distance from Harborland, the old foreigner's mansions / neighborhood, and plenty of shopping and dining.
