Go!

five stars

Not the prettiest city, but definately the most fascinating. I hate "Lost in Translation," to be in Tokyo and crying for loneliness and boredom is truly a miracle of moronity!

not for touring, more for appreciation

four stars

I have been to Japan only three times, but as my wife is Japanese I have a somewhat local perspective. I am not particularly a Japan-o-phile so I don't really come here with tourism in mind but rather to spend a month with family, attend weddings, etc. Personally, I am not a big fan of Japanese tourist attractions or history, Roppongi, Tokyo Tower, temples, etc; every city has its share of particular sites like those. I do enjoy the temples, because like in Europe, you can always stay, every neighborhood temple is open and in "production"; you can sit and think (or not think; they call it meditation here as opposed to Europe where it has more specific religious connotation). The people are adorable and I enjoy the incredible beauty of the Japanese way of appreciating nature. Of course if you like Japanese food it is terrific here, and is usually very cheap (western food is both bad and expensive). I do a lot of walking around and marval at the Japanese way of integrating the extremely-advanced aspects of civilisation with the hightly traditional. If you are looking for an easy packaged-tour-guided-tour it doesn't really work in Tokyo, like it does in Paris or Rome (which are organised as sort of Disneyland-for-adults), nor will it really work with the rest of Japan. I do try to spend a week or so in Kyoto, Kobe, Kamakura (really worth seeing if you have not much time as it is close to Tokyo), Nikko. As of mid-2005, Japan is perhaps cheaper than Europe (contrary to its reputation, established in the 1990's, as an extremely expensive place to be); However, almost nobody really speaks much English.

The perfect city for the metro-lovin' young adult

five stars

While in Tokyo, I've had the greatest fun in my life, even as a budget-minded college student. I've also had the worst fun in my life when I returned home with Salmonella for a week (I don't recommend experimenting w. raw chicken while you're there). All the neat gadgets, convenience, and the relatively-low language barrier makes this a great city for young adults. It's a good idea to do your homework and get a background of Tokyo/Japan before you arrive (the districts and what they can offer, basic speaking skills, contacting any friends/family who have been there before). When in doubt, just say "nihongo wa dekimasen," which roughly means "I can't speak Japanese." What made this trip so much fun for my brother and I was that we took control of where to go and what to do. I don't recommend riding a tour bus with the typical tourist stops unless you have children in your group. Travelling by all means (foot, subway, taxi) is a good idea and take plenty of pictures. Some tips: *Don't be afraid to ask anyone for help (directions, translations, etc.) The police are especially helpful for guiding you in the right direction. *Your electronics will have no problem in Tokyo; the 120V plugs are the same (good for rechargeable batteries). Again, bring a good digicam w. plenty of memory! *Keep a travel bag (satchel, backpack) for your personal items, new merchandise and your trash (sometimes it's difficult to find trash cans/recycle bins). *Since you're in Japan, have at least a few high-quality meals to get a real taste of the food (Sushi, Ramen, Okonomiyaki). *Like Korea, Japan's quick commerce favors cash, so carry plenty with you (several hundred American dollar's worth should be fine). Many of your purchases may not be from major shops. *Remember what the other members of your group are wearing (clothing style, color). It can save you in areas with high traffic (like Shibuya, Tokyo's "Times Square"). Distinctive hats or tops can work. *Grab a copy of the train map for reference. There should be copies in english. *Airfare is typically cheaper in spring/fall, outside of Japan's major holidays. Even so, bring a light coat because the climate can fluctuate on the same day. *Last but not least: SAFETY. If something doesn't look right or safe, don't do it. Hence my raw chicken ordeal. The flight to Japan might be tough, so drink enough water and stretch often. Always take care of the basics during your stay such as sleep, water and balanced meals. This keeps the stress low and the fun high. Sorry for such a lengthy review, I hope that it's been helpful for you. Again, Japan's been such a great experience that my brother and I have already made plans for part two! Enjoy! :)

Foreigners go Tokyo!? Think twice!

two stars

Undoubtedly the best place to window shop as the stuff are exorbitant. Pretty women are everywhere. City of bad pollution. Standard living is second to none. It's better to learn japanese language before you go to Japan as the people there simply dun care if you could understand them. Restaurant menus are mostly in Japanese, gosh! how to place order!Hotel room is pathetically small yet expensive.

Tokyo and more...

four stars

I love tokyo as it is... especially Asakusa which gives you a feel of the atmosphere in ancient Japan... Its a good place to shop, wine and dine. But do note that some places are really expensive, especially in Ginza and Shinjuku area. I simply the food there, its not as expensive what I thot to be, but trust me you will enjoy it :) A train ride to Maihama-Tokyo disneyland will be fun, but be careful of the train line... it can bring you outskirt of Tokyo if you board the wrong one and you probably have to wait for 30 mins before you reach the next place.. well, that's wht happened to me in 2002...good grief! In anycase, if you wanna explore Japan, you should visit different states to have a different feel... * Will update soon when I return from my 2nd trip to Japan Cheers

The best city that I have been visited

five stars

I travel to Japan for severial times, Tokyo is the best city that I have been visited. The people are nice, the foods are delicious. Also the streets are so clean. The only bad thing is the price is too expensive. I'm gonna visit it again very soon!
