Chiang Mai, Thailand's second city in the north is set up just for the tourist. Motorists are frequently stopping for tourists. The variety of activities is endless. On Monday you can take a walking tour of the old part of the city by following colored bricks on the sidewalk. Tuesday, ride an elephant and go rafting. Wednesday, visit a hill tribe village, boil an egg in a hot spring and swim under a waterfall. Other activities include flying an ultralite aircraft, cliff climbing, bunge jumping, getting a massage and shopping the famous night market. Chiang Mai also has a first class zoo and more Wats (temples) than I can count. You can also just sit in a cafe and sip pineapple juice.

(Report Problem)People coming from Bangkok will find the place far more relaxed and the weather cooler. But it has its traffic jams at rush hours and pollution can be felt. However the center of the city (inside the moat) is calm with many temples, small houses with garden, shops, cheap restaurants and hotels. Now that low cost airlines have been introduced it is really easy and cheap to fly to Chiang Mai, but it is also accessible by night train (it has to be tried at least once)and many buses. Like other cities in the kingdom you feel really safe at all hours, the most dangerous place being the road, there are frequent accidents due to reckless driving and drunks (especially at night). People are smilling and friendly even though in touristy places you feel its no more a natural smile but a commercial one. This is the place for your shopping, everything is made in the region, so it is cheaper (but if you got straight to the factories you won't get a better price than on the markets). Street food is the best, better than in many restaurants and of course very cheap, only advice when picking a street vendor, choose the ones where thai people go, avoid those without customers. In a few minutes you can be outside the city and enjoy beautiful sceneries and fresh air in the nearby mountains, it is a good starting point to explore the rest of the northern regions (Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Chiang Saen). Great deals on dental works and eyewear. Some hospitals (incl. Ram Hospital) have great standards,so no worry if you need some medical attention. Nightlife has not the excesses you'll find in Bangkok, but there are many good spots usually located along the river and around the night bazaar.

(Report Problem)Excellent Mountain Views in Chiang Mai. Relaxing atmosphere in the resort. Exciting Tour with biking, trekking, elephant-riding and micro-light plane flying. However the city is a bit polluted.

(Report Problem)Chiang Mai is a great place to stay, if you want to see parts of the wonderful northern Thailand, but still want to shop and have fun. It's esay to plan and arrange tours into the rainforests, tribes and other interesting places.
