I absolutely adore the town! I was there in 1998 with a school group. I went back in 1999, and saw the town all over again. I was offered a position teaching there, and unfortunately had to decline it. If you get an opportunity, see a show at the Semper. Of course don't miss Raphael' "Sistine Madonna". At the university "TU-Dresden", there is a "torture yard", that was used by the SS, to do interagations of suspected trouble makers. You can tour the prison cells, see the location of the guillatine, and view a plaque dedicated to those who died there. A cruise down the Elbe is a perfect end to the trip. I loved strolling around at night listening to the street musicians. Dresden is my second home! ICH BIN EIN DRESDENER!
