Hamburg is a very big port city with very big, busy docklands. It's also a very businessy city with a big corporate sector which means lots of the people are quite well off and there's lots of expensive clothes shops and restaurants. The nightlife for young people is mostly in St. Pauli or around the Reeperbahn. I thought this area was seedy and dangerous. I was disappointed that there wasn't a bohemian area with any cafe society like Berlin or Munich. Also, arty stuff (cinemas, galleries) is thin on the ground. Overall I found the local people were tourist friendly, but Berlin and Munich are much better for artsy stuff, for chilling in cool cafes and bars and for going out at night.
