If you're looking to start an Italian love affair, then Rome is just the place to start. My first trip to the capital will stay in my mind for ever and I wish i'd visited sooner. Watching the sun rise on the eternal city can be matched by very few other experiences on this earth. It's best to travel around on foot with a good map and some basic Italian. Especially as taxis can be quite expensive and some drivers take advantage of tourists. If in doubt tell your hotel reception where you're planning to go and how much it should cost for a taxi, if you don't want to walk. Do not be conned into parting with money for overpriced fares. If in doubt call a 'vigile urbano' they're everywhere and usually speak basic English. Italians are naturally friendly, so you'll never get lost or feel unwelcome. Although it's always good to be on the cautious side, stretch out your arms and embrace the breathtaking beauty of this unforgettable place and its wonderful people. I can't wait for my next trip in September!
