We would never go again

one star

Rome must have run out of money. The streets are pot-holed, the buildings are filthy. Cars and scooters dominate everywhere - roads, pavements, squares, making walking awful. It is outrageously expensive for what you get. The historical sites are not looked after. Even the area immediately around St Peters is scruffy. We have been to no other European city anything like Rome. Look at of the window on the airport train; what you see is what you are going to get!

Really nice city

four stars

I've been twice in Rome and everytime I feel like home. I booked a room through www.bookhotelsinrome.com (a great booking service by the way). Rome has much to offer to all travellers, whether you're seeking archaeological wonders, amazing shopping deals, or a romantic adventure. To avoid disappointment be sure to book your hotel in Rome well in advance and take the time to enjoy some of the greatest wonders of Italy when you visit Rome

Fantastic City..but beware...

five stars

My wife and I have been to Rome many times, and it really is one of the most fantastic places on earth. Like any large city though, there are problems. The litter and the graffiti are bad, and I don't understand why the Rome authorities don't do more to clean this up. Also, as previously mentioned, there are many pickpockets and con men, but it really is just a case of keeping your money safe and always being alert. Watch out for taxi drivers - always agree a price before hand. Watch out for overcharging for cold drinks, snacks, etc. Again, get a price before hand. Same with the wine already on tables in some restaurants. Don't just accept this, as it is usually cheap plonk that you will be charged a fortune for. Always ask for the wine list. Other than that, the negatives are far outweighed by the stunning beauty of the sights, the fascinating history and the unique atmosphere. So enjoy. Ciao!

Rome is great, but watch out for extortionate foreign exchange rates!

five stars

We’re just back from a 4-day trip to Rome and it’s fantastic! I lived in northern Italy for four years and was so busy working that I never got to see Rome … but made up for it now – the old Rome is astonishing; the view from the top of St Peter’s was unforgettable, great food, friendly people. Just one thing: watch out for daylight robbery of the foreign exchanges. I got ‘fregato’ at FOREXCHANGE in the main Termini Station where they charged a fixed rate of 3.90 Euros plus a commission of 17.9% (yes nearly eighteen percent!) for changing UK pounds into Euros. And that’s despite me protesting and trying to get my money back in fluent Italian!! My advice is to check the official exchange rate and do your calculations beforehand, making sure that you only pay 1.5-2% extra before handing over your money. Alternatively check the rates using your credit or debit card. You can buy a nice pizza or two with the money that you will be saving.

What an amazing place!

four stars

We Stayed just outside of the main town in a hotel called b&h wardorf. Was a lovely hotel and only 5 mins walk from the tube, and a few mins from the bus station! Once in Rome all the different stops on the tube explore something else! You never know what is around the next corner. You need to be fairly fit as alot of walking is involved (there are sight seeing busses and public transport is great). But the sights and history are amazing. Food is fantastic, you need to keep to the back streets and just out side the town to get value for money. about 8 euro for pizza or pasta dish. Would certainly recomend. We went for 8 days and would definatly go back! May daughter loved every minute too, she is 8 years old and took everything in!

The most beautiful city on earth

five stars

If you're looking to start an Italian love affair, then Rome is just the place to start. My first trip to the capital will stay in my mind for ever and I wish i'd visited sooner. Watching the sun rise on the eternal city can be matched by very few other experiences on this earth. It's best to travel around on foot with a good map and some basic Italian. Especially as taxis can be quite expensive and some drivers take advantage of tourists. If in doubt tell your hotel reception where you're planning to go and how much it should cost for a taxi, if you don't want to walk. Do not be conned into parting with money for overpriced fares. If in doubt call a 'vigile urbano' they're everywhere and usually speak basic English. Italians are naturally friendly, so you'll never get lost or feel unwelcome. Although it's always good to be on the cautious side, stretch out your arms and embrace the breathtaking beauty of this unforgettable place and its wonderful people. I can't wait for my next trip in September!

Found a great bookshop/café for music lovers

five stars

On my recent visit to the Rome, I stayed in a neighborhood called Trastevere - definitely the place to be, streets filled with restaurants, cafés & trendy boutiques..Nearby my hotel, between the churchs of San Francesco a Ripa and Santa Maria in Trastevere I found great music bookshop, called Daseia. They have a large selection of sheet music and books to browse and a café where you can sit and have a glass of wine or a coffee. They also serve a some light dishes for lunch and dinner..The space has free internet WI-FI good for checking your emails.. and weekends they have live music events and presentations..the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting..english is spoken fluently...A+...........
