Warsaw is a city that surprises in a positive way. Expecting a grey, commie-style town full of old ladies with kerchiefs on their heads, we were going to head to Krakow and Gdansk instead. But we loved Warsaw so much that we extended our stay from one to five days. It is a large, vibrant, cosmopolitan city, with very interesting architecture from all time periods, including infamous communist-era buildings that aren't at all "ugly" or "grey". Beautiful parks, great clubs and restaurants, friendly people, glorious palaces and castles, art, gritty downtown...this is surely one of the most underrated cities in Europe, or even the world. It was our favorite place during our European trip in 2004.
