Probably a biased review as my wife hails from Lisbon.I've known this unique city for over 30yrs and seen all the changes, socially, politically and culturaly during this time. It's unlike any other place on the Iberian peninsular. It is NOT Meditteranean but very much Atlantic. It's setting on the Tagus ,with red roofed, whitwashed houses sloping to the river is beautiful. It's a wonderful mixture of historical old, and new.A fascinating shopping area downtown, where amongst the designer stuff there are still old fashioned shops selling only gloves or umbrellas and no doubt stiff collars if you wanted! The Expo area looking out on to the new Vasco de Gama bridge is lovely. The prices are all reasonable for food, transport, clothes, and accomodation.(stock up on shoes while you are there.just as good as Italy and half the price of London) Eating out is a marvellous experience-I could go on for ever about the fresh fish, seafood, snack bars, pastellarias and coffee places. You'll never be hungry there. Hop on a train and 30 mins later you can have all the beach life you want from, sophisticated international Estoril to Cascais and on further to the wild Atlantic at Guincho. Friendly courteous service wherever you go.
Great for: Beaches, History/Culture, Theatre/Music, Nightlife, Budget Travel
Last Visit: july 2004
