I first visited Lisbon in 1975 and it retains old-fashioned charm, despite an increase in tourism and its effects. Some of the taxi drivers are very grumpy and unpleasant, even dangerous drivers. Public transport is good. Eating out in the city centre no longer guarantees a good meal at reasonable prices but there are great local places once you move away from downtown. You can avoid taking a tourist tram by just jumping on the regular no. 28 tram in the Baixa and taking it past St George's Caste to the terminus and back for a couple of escudos. A church worth visiting is St Vincent's in The Alfama, not for the church itself but for the attached monastery where there are dozens of marvellous blue-and-white tiled illustrations of the fables of La Fontaine (with English explanations too). Oh yes, and then there are the pastries, so many and so good (and all low-fat with zero cholesterol as I was assured, by myself). Fado is generally a tourist trap, with venues upping prices and sticking you with extras when they see you coming. A trip to the top of the monument of the navigators at Belem is worth making for the views.

(Report Problem)This is to document my complete dissatisfaction of the service I received from a Greece-based broker, to rent a car in Lisbon; and I advise anyone who would like to rent a car in Europe NOT TO DEAL with that company, for the following reasons : * The company economy car rentals is advertizing on their website (www.economycarrentals.com), things that are not true; and they are not delivering their commitment * The service of economy car rentals was not upto the standard, and their customer service is unprofessional; * Their relationship with the renter is not healthy which reflects on the customer; * I paid for a car class and received a lower class of cars; * I was supposed to receive additional benefits, but I received none; * I took the risks & inconvenience due to inability to upgrade the car (and pay the difference), and drove without insurance. In brief, they cheated me... Thank you Ehab

(Report Problem)Probably a biased review as my wife hails from Lisbon.I've known this unique city for over 30yrs and seen all the changes, socially, politically and culturaly during this time. It's unlike any other place on the Iberian peninsular. It is NOT Meditteranean but very much Atlantic. It's setting on the Tagus ,with red roofed, whitwashed houses sloping to the river is beautiful. It's a wonderful mixture of historical old, and new.A fascinating shopping area downtown, where amongst the designer stuff there are still old fashioned shops selling only gloves or umbrellas and no doubt stiff collars if you wanted! The Expo area looking out on to the new Vasco de Gama bridge is lovely. The prices are all reasonable for food, transport, clothes, and accomodation.(stock up on shoes while you are there.just as good as Italy and half the price of London) Eating out is a marvellous experience-I could go on for ever about the fresh fish, seafood, snack bars, pastellarias and coffee places. You'll never be hungry there. Hop on a train and 30 mins later you can have all the beach life you want from, sophisticated international Estoril to Cascais and on further to the wild Atlantic at Guincho. Friendly courteous service wherever you go.

(Report Problem)I was in Lisbon one month ago for one week. It was my first time in the city and I had a brilliant time. The cultural district is very rich and pleasant to walk in. In every corner one discovers the beautiful sceaneries of the river. It is a city where modern and ancient live together in a very beautiful and particular way.

(Report Problem)I have been to Lisbon twice so far in my lifetime, both were totally exhilirating time. Historically there is so much to do such as looking at a copy of the San Francisco Bridge, plus of course the same type of Jesus statue as in Rio. At at the same time there is good night life with small clubs and bars dotted all over. Lisbon is very mountainous so is good if you enjoy lots of exercise, however keeping in time with this you must also try out the many varieties of cakes in the tea shops. Lisbon is my kind of destination.
