Inverness is a brilliant place to base yourself while touring in the Highlands. It's an historic old town, with lots of old buildings and the Ness River (really beautiful - great for a picturesque walk) running through the town. I first went there 15 years ago but visiting it again this year I've found it really different - no longer a sleepy Scottish town, it now has lots of great restaurants, live music, and interesting pubs and bars, and seemed to be full of visitors from all corners of the globe. The people are the friendliest in Scotland and couldn't have been more hospitable. It's so easy to get from Inverness to the nearby great wilderness in Glen Affric or the Cairngorms, or quaint little seaside villages like Findhorn or Dornoch. And so much history, going right back to neolithic times. Good useful website www.scotland-info.co.uk/ - set up by an Inverness local and has lots of excellent tips.
Great for: Hiking/Camping, History/Culture, Theatre/Music, Nightlife, Budget Travel, Family Holidays

(Report Problem)When you're in the Inverness area make sure that you take the time to visit Loch Ness - there's so much to see and do even when you are not busy hunting for the Loch Ness Monster! A great website that I found was www.vistlochness.net that has a list of events, maps and information on all the different areas that you can visit around Loch Ness

(Report Problem)This is the most overrated city in Europe. All the old Invernessians have gone and have been replaced by a young breed of materialistic, unfriendly people.
