Miami is exactly what it appears to be in all the movies and tv shows! Landing into the city at night, the lights of the city make it a mini las vegas! Although my stay wasn't for very long, the experience was once in a life time! Staying in miami beach, with its art deco feel and of course miles of white sandy beach, made it an ideal base for my visit to the city! The trendy south beach area is a must see, even if its only to people watch the beautiful people! Also whilst in miami, you got to take an airboat through the everglades, it made me feel like i was in csi miami, which is always good!

(Report Problem)We went last year - it depends how you take it , .hence the big mix of reviews here. Our take : 1. Miami beach is lovely, nice and quiet too. Our hotel (Wyndham Miami beach) had fantastic views, good access to the beach and a lovely pool area and we were glad we there rather than in one of the boutique onea 2. The beach on South Beach is rubbish. There's a horrible vast concrete bit before the beach itself which isn't all that good and it is full of people showing off thinking they're cool. Unpleasant. 3. It does get crowded on the main run for restaurants and what have you leading up to Ocean Drive but the vibes are good. Food is excellent, particularly if you avoid the so called 'exclusive' places. Great music too. 4. If you go off the main drag, you can find some interesting places, we found a great dim sum place and in the North we went to this huge market with a very latin and caribbean feel Taking the fashionistas in good spirit (i.e we laughed at them), we otherwise found Miami a very chilled relaxing place and would love to go back - part of the appeal here is the mix of cultures from southern US to latin and caribbean

(Report Problem)I am about to go to Miami for my third trip in 3 years, I really love this city. I hang out on South Beach (SOBe) for a few days, sitting in the diners and restaurants for breakfast on Ocean Drive, eating my eggs over easy and drinking some fresh OJ and latte. Its a great way to start the day. The sun is normally beaming, the sea glistening. It really is a great place to go. After breafkast I saunter back along the boardwalk back to my hotel, a quick change and I find a hammock or sun lounger to spend the next 3 hours reading my book. During that time, I need a break from the book, and I go for a swim in the pool, cooling off and perhaps ordering a drink from the bar. Feeling peckish I find a restaurant for lunch and have a light salad and then return for my afternoon shift. Reading some more and a little more swimming. Watching the sun go down with a large gin and tonic, I feel its time for a shower. After showering and dressing its time to go and find a nice restaurant for dinner. Somehwere kike Van Dykes or Sushi Samba sounds good to me. Then its off to the Shore Club or the Delano for a couple of cocktails and then onto a club or back to the hotel should I have run out of energy. I love this place...

(Report Problem)I was rather dissapointed of Miami. In Miami-Beach you have those small shopping-centers with pedestrian-areas where you can say that they are something like a center but in Miami itself there is nothing! The beaches are rather dirty and it is not worth to fly over the Atlantic to go there. If you go to the Adriatic coast it is similar but much cleaner, more beautiful and not so expensive. And the trip is not so long! It was interesting but never again!

(Report Problem)If you can overlook the drug scene and the old muscular men wearing heavy chains and white pants while blasting 80's inspired electronic music, then this is a great place to be. The gay scene is vibrant with many international travellers stressing over a bronzed tan. The beach is clean and sparkling georgeous!! The public transit is cheap and easily accessible. Pack light. The hostel is located in SoBe.

(Report Problem)I moved to Miami 5 years ago so now there are about 10 of us who don't speak spanish here. The old joke I heard before moving here went something like this... "Oh yes, I visited Miami. It was a beautiful place, with lots to do, great weather and very close to the U.S." Knowing spanish is a big plus but many of the people speak english fine and I usually don't run into problems. Miami to me is exciting because of its uniqueness. Yes, there are the common strip malls, starbucks, etc you find in the rest of the country. But there are also some very unique cities that are trying to do everything to stay away from that look. These include Coral Gables, Coconut Grove (currently trying to keep a Home Depot from coming), Key Biscayne (my favorite) and, of course, South Beach. There is also a well-funded attempt to clean up the area around Brickell (downtown) and the Miami River. Give it a few years to see what happens. My biggest complaint about Miami is the traffic. I live 20 miles from work and find that biking is actually easier and less stressful. A few of the times I was forced to drive, I had one or two times the drive took the same hour and a half that the bike ride would have taken me. There have been a few attempts to bring in mass-transit, but it doesn't appear to be working. During the hours of 6-11am and 3-7pm expect to spend a lot of time on the freeways and the apt-named Useless-1 (US-1). Crime is also a big problem. Although I haven't been a victim yet, I also don't stray from the lower crime areas. Here are a list of things to do. But beware that I typically don't like crowds so my tastes may not be like yours: 1) The Keys 2) The Everglades 3) Fairchild Tropical Garden - South Miami. Take the Old Cutler Rd south. A very pretty drive. 4) Coco-walk in Coconut Grove (although a lot of people, it isn't shoulder to shoulder) 5) Miracle Mile (Coral Gables), a lot of very good restaurants 6) South Beach - A lot of people but the Art-Deco architecture can't be missed 7) Crandon Park - Key Biscayne. Go on a weekday and you will have the most beautiful beach without anyone around. 8) Coral Castle - Some insane guy built his entire house by hand out of dead coral. 9) Trattoria Luna - 9477 S. Dixie Highway. By far the best Italian restaurant my wife and I have ever eaten. Pricey and sometimes hard to get reservations but well well worth it.

(Report Problem)Miami Beach is the BEST! Best parties, best weather, best hotels and spas. Can be a bit pricey if you stay right in the mix, but worth every dollar if you can spare it! Great to visit - hot, beautiful people, very GLBT-friendly, but crazy drivers. Take taxis if you can, lol.
