After living in Buffalo NY and Rochester NY for the past 30 years, my husband and I made the move here in July 2003. That was the best decision we could have ever made!! This city is friendly, clean, fun and growing like crazy!! Beautiful beaches, great restaurants, the best zoo I have ever been too and the list goes on and on..... Come on down for a visit and you will see how much this city has grown, in size and great people!

(Report Problem)This town is amazing. It still has its small town charm. I can't get enough, and I am moving there in May.

(Report Problem)Some people leave places like New York and Chicago to get away from the hustle and craziness big city life. Jacksonville is a hidden gem often called a big little small town because of warmth and southern hospitality consistantly displayed by the people who've made Jacksonville home. The saying must be true "the warmer the weather the warmer the people". The city of Jacksonville offers a combination of the beach and the city life, if you want it. The fresh seafood at beach restuarants where most have outdoor decks and sometimes live bands playing, there is no such thing as bad view! A classic poolbar called Petes where you can still play pool for 25 cents a game! Most beaches like North Jax beach beaches are private but still open to the public 24/7. A place to take your family and or sweetheart for a romantic stroll along side the river on the riverwalk. Its water, bridges, smiling faces, and mostly sunshine where ever you go! And where else can you get a spin on convention with a drive thru Jamaican restuarant called The Pepperpot where you can order jerk chicken and rice and get it in less then 10 minutes. Some of the best southern cooking restaurants ever! Neighborhoods like San Marco and Riverside and Springfield, which have some of the most beautiful, classic homes rich in history without the pricey cost and the snobby people, plus a riverfront view to boot! A huge nightclub called Plush and the Leopard lounge, where all types of music is played, and a 4 am last call! Never try to compare any city in the south and especially in Florida to any other place in the the north or midwest there is nothing to compare. The mentality is different the people are different for obvious reasons. The passion of southerners concerning the hometowns can sometimes be funny when listening to the stories they tell. Jacksonville to me is not just a place to visit but a place to live. Some people leave their cities to get away for vacation but people in Jacksonville it's right in their backyard.

(Report Problem)I was raised here, then business required me to travel & move elsewhere. I've spent time in Columbus & Cleveland, Indianapolis, Boston, Providence...all over...and came back to Jax the first chance I got. This city has changed tremendously in the 30+ years since my family came here from Chicago. You'll often hear people badmouthing Jacksonville, and many times they have little (if any) experience with the place...just repeating what they've heard elsewhere, or clinging to old arguments. We have numerous excellent restaurants, big-city shopping, and enough outdoor activities to keep you going year 'round. This place is a water- and golf-lovers PARADISE. And we have plenty of quality theater, music, dance & art...all without the hassle of NYC (which I've also experienced first-hand). The weather is exceptional...and the only reason we have so much traffic (which, granted, is growing faster than our infrastructure can handle it) is because so many people have figured out what a gem Jacksonville truly is. A great place to visit (AND live).

(Report Problem)I lived here for five years, and I am constantly amazed by the warmth and hospitatlity of this community. The Landing, the Beaches, and so many different places to relax... these all make Jacksonville a delight to experience.

(Report Problem)I'm a native of Jacksonville and I personally love the city. When most people visit they usually visit the beaches and the more richer neihborhoods of Jacksonville. But if You just take the time and gas up the car and ride around the whole city you will see that its different personalities and things to do. In fact its plenty things to do, its just that people come down here and don't realize how big it is and figure that the they covered most of the space in the city, when really they only covered a small portion.

(Report Problem)The worst thing about Jacksonville is that the people in charge are not progressive thinkers. Roads are planned very poorly and there's only a few places in town where you can walk around and not have to use your car. There's no charming "college town" atmosphere around the few colleges in the city. The public school system is atrocious and more atrocious is that the parents don't even know it's atrocious. The whole atmosphere of the town is conventional, suburban, chain restaurant, status quo. The only interesting go- getters in the city are the transplants.

(Report Problem)I'm a native so i know the good points. I have cousins in large cities up north and understand their frustration with this city. The downtown will not be a destination until more people live (and play) there. This is coming but will take a few more years. Now...If you have a native to guide you (preferably with a comfortable boat), there is no better place to visit. Great waterways, beaches, plenty of cheap golf, and some good restaurants (I happen to like "Awful Waffle" and Hooters). If your looking for theme parks you're only a couple hours north of theme park world. If you make it to International drive, you can't swing a stuffed disney character without hitting a tourist trap, er, attraction. We don't really want to be Orlando or New York city. One major league sport(Go Jags), a minor league baseball team (cheaper seats $ cold beverages), a large enough arena to attract an occasional big name star, an international (sic) airport, good (getting better) schools, a big beautiful river, several styles of beaches and associated lifestyles, more golf courses than Donald Trump, and the lowest cost of living this side of Alabama. Maybe not a nice place to visit, but you would want to live here.

(Report Problem)Jacksonville is one of the worst backwaters I have ever visited. Don't let the skyline fool you. This place has nothing to offer. Downtown is dead and boring. There is no culture or decent nightlife to speak of and the only thing everyone brags about is the beach. Now I know why! Don't bother stopping (well, you may have to because traffic to nowhere is so bad). You'll do wise to go someplace else.
