Volcano was great!
We found the park to be an outstanding visit! The Parks information staff was very helpful, not only for info about the volcano, but also for other places to take the family a little further out from the park. The volcano itself is magnificent! You will have to do quite a bit of walking if you want to see the best of it. On the day we visited, the lava flow was about 2 1/2 miles from the road, as a previous flow had blocked the coastal highway. We were informed it was not an easy hike due to the nature of lava. If you're looking for the ease of a Disney attraction, better stick with Disney. We opted not to make the hike due to children in the group. We did see the lava flow glowing in the night though! We also hiked to the petroglyphs which were great! We would return again if we visited Hawaii. Thanks to the Parks employee who gave us the tip about the enclosed beachs for swimming!

In order to get to the lava you have to hike over the cooled lava, in some areas it is hard, but if you follow the PATH it is easier. There is never a given on where the lava is flowing one day to the other. IT IS LAVA! not a contained tourist attraction like zoos or anything. some days it is as close as half a mile others you have to hike at least a mile to view it. don't get discouraged and walk towards steam, that's where the lava is. it is definetly worth it, i have seen old ladies and little kids hike to the lava with no problems. *Bring a pair of gloves, the lava can be sharp if you pick it up or fall down at all.*

The park service realy fell down on volcano park, the parking was poorly planed and the information on the distance to walk on the lava flow did not even exsist. There were no one to talk to about the difficult walk or dangers. The people who did the planing on this should go back to a desk job because they sure do not know how to give the puplic any help.We walk the flow which is a hard walk, but I felt sorry for a lot of the people that got in the middle of the walk and could not finish because of the lack of infomation.Because of poor parking planing ( about 1-1.5 mile walk from car to visitor trailer)then a lon wat to even start on the flow???
