Lava Tree State Monument
Description
Located in the lava flow strewn and thick rainforested area of Pahoa, this is probably one of the more unique state parks in Hawaii. The 3/4 mile trail winds through cool and forested area and features the remains of a forest of trees covered with lava during an ancient lava flow. The lava burned away the tree trunks, leaving oddly shaped formations. The hike is easy and enjoyable and picnic areas are available. The area is filled with native birds and other wildlife that are best viewed in the early morning or late evening. No water or restrooms are available. The area is open daily from dawn until dusk. -Lottie Tagupa
