Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art features over 200 galleries filled with treasures spanning continents and cultures, drawn from a collection of more than 400,000 works of art. The huge stone edifice of the museum, supported by majestic Doric columns, looks over the Schuylkill River. Scale the steps made famous in the 'Rocky' movies.
My wife and I just went for the first time this weekend after moving to the area. It's a very beautiful museum which has large quanity of french impressionists. The layout is a little peculiar leading to problems finding your way around when they are installing a new exhibit.
I have to admit, we stopped here more for the Rocky steps (hehe, try running up them yourself!) than for the art [as did many that we saw.. running up and down the steps with video cameras].
Still, I would recommend a visit here if you're into art. It's also neat to go to the little gazebo (outside) and look around.
What a great museum! Medieval to contemporary art, including non-Western and crafts, help to make this exhibit inclusive and stimulating. The space itself is gorgeous and conducive to browsing. Convenient parking, a really wonderful cafeteria, and spectacular views of central Phila. combine for a must-see Phila. attraction.
This is a wonderful museum with something for everyone. My granddaughters (ages 2-14) find it fascinating. Sundays are great because it is "pay what you want" day. With a very large family, it is very convenient and we can attend more frequently.
