Ka Jok See Restaurant & Bar
Every now and again one finds a “hidden gem,” where all the ingredients for a memorable evening are in place. That is why Ka Jok See, arguably Phuket Town's most popular restaurant, has been drawing the locals, and a few lucky tourists, over the years. The building is an 18th Century Sino-Portuguese gem with simple décor, but a charming sense of style. Elegant, but warm and welcoming, the fare served here is exceptionally good. Dishes such as the succulent prawns in vermicelli and jurassic salad are prepared in a traditional Bangkok style and cooked with a flair that raises even the simplest of dishes to new heights.
OK the food is not the best or the cheapest on the island but it is quite nice and portions are hearty. Now if it's a party you're looking for and you're over 30 this is the place a brilliant atmosphere guaranteed.
If overpriced, mediocre food, accompanied by oldies music is your thing, rush down immediately to this epic tourist trap.
The owner's simple method is to "make relations" with all the hotel concierges around the island. And guess what - when you as a hotel guest then ask that same concierge about the best, coolest and hippest "original" Thai restaurant, guess what he will tell you.
It's his 30%, after all - not to mention the overpriced hotel car he will recommend to bring you into Phuket town (45 minutes away from all major hotels) and back.
The most telltale sign is that when entering the place, all you see is tourists, tourists and more tourists. Not a single Thai local, nor any of the over fifty thousand expatriates living on Phuket will ever step foot in there.
Think about that, and then eat elsewhere. Your stomach will thank you.
