St Andrew's Church
Description
St Andrew's Anglican Church has been active on its present site since the 11th Century. Notable amongst its previous worshipers are Catherine of Aragon, Sir Francis Drake, Sir John Hawkins, Captain Bligh and Sir Francis Chichester. It was almost completely destroyed in WW2 but was beautifully restored, including some magnificent twentieth century stained glass windows, by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. You can also see the place where Sir Francis Drake scratched a voyage plan on the wall. Stewards will be happy to show you round on weekdays and fill you in on nearly a thousand years of worshiping history. Or come and join in with one of the four Sunday services, reflecting both traditional and modern worship.
